Biden allocates $500 million to help Afghan refugees

US President Joe Biden has committed up to $500 million to meet the “unforeseen emergency needs of refugees, displaced persons, victims of conflict, and other persons at risk as a result of the situation in Afghanistan.”

"It is important in the national interest to provide assistance in an amount not to exceed $500 million from the United States Emergency Refugee and Immigration Assistance Fund, " Biden said in a note to Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and released by the White House.

In the memo, Biden told Blinken that he was "authorized and directed to refer this resolution to Congress."
