Who was Zachary Snow ?

The Ada County Coroner’s Office has identified the Idaho man who was shot by Boise police officers last week and who died over the weekend.

In a news release Monday afternoon, the coroner’s office identified the man as Zachary Snow, a 26-year-old Boise resident, who died at 2:51 a.m. Saturday at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise. The coroner’s office did not rule on the cause or manner of Snow’s death, labeling both as pending. The statement said Snow was hospitalized after “an altercation with police” on Wednesday.

Statement

However, the Boise Police Department said in a statement last week that police shot the man. Two police officers are on paid administrative leave: Officers Matt Jacobs and Clifton Snodderly, who have been with the BPD for 14 and four years, respectively. It is common practice to place officers on paid leave after police shootings. Police said in a press release that they were alerted to an allegedly suicidal man around 5 p.m. Wednesday threatening to jump off an overpass or tall building. After searching the center, police located it near South Capitol Boulevard and West Myrtle Street. Some of the BPD officers in the area had “prior contacts with the subject and were aware of his criminal history,” according to Wednesday’s press release.

Shooting

After trying to get close to Snow, police said in the press release that they “perceived a threat” before shooting him. In a press release on Friday, BPD said officers perceived a “deadly threat.” As of Monday, it is unknown if Snow had a gun in his possession when police shot him. Those who knew Snow remember him as someone who cared about others and enjoyed drawing pictures, but he had his problems. “He always tried to do what he could to improve people’s lives, whether it was through laughter or jokes,” said Timothy Morgan, partner of Snow’s sister, during an interview with the Idaho Statesman. “He really cared a lot about others.” In November 2016, Snow pleaded guilty to a felony possession of a controlled substance and was sentenced to at least two years in prison with a maximum sentence of seven years.

Death

According to a guilty plea notice form in the case, Snow, then 21, had only finished school until the eighth grade. He also described having multiple mental health conditions and was prescribed medication. Online records from the Idaho Department of Correction indicate that Snow was released from prison on June 15 of this year. At the time of his death, Snow was on probation in connection with the felony drug offense charge, and his probation was scheduled to end in 2023.

He also had an active arrest warrant after failing to appear in court in August. for various misdemeanors stemming from an Arrest in 2016. A warrant affidavit described him as homeless in August 2021. The coroner’s office said the investigation into Snow’s death was still ongoing and is being conducted.

Incident

by the Ada County Critical Incidents Task Force and the Garden City Police Department. Wednesday’s police shooting is at least the 11th fatal shooting in Idaho so far in 2021, according to the Idaho Statesman files. The shooting is also the eighth to take place in the Treasure Valley so far this year, with or without a fatality.
