The party turned tragic. The driver of a car drove into a crowd taking part in a carnival, Sunday March 20, in the city of La Louvière, Belgium, killing at least six people and seriously injuring seven others, said Jacques Gobert, the mayor of this city in the south of Belgium. It also reports 18 minor injuries.


The accident occurred around 5 a.m. in Strépy-Bracquegnies, a village which is part of the industrial town of La Louvière, the authorities said. According to a statement from the mayor's office, a hundred people had just left the sports hall to go back to the center of the village when a vehicle rushed at them at high speed. A press conference by the authorities is scheduled for 11 a.m. in La Louvière.


Belgian Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden offered her condolences to the families and friends of those killed. "What was supposed to be a friendly party turned into a tragedy. We are monitoring the situation closely ," she said on Twitter. The reasons for the tragedy are unknown at this time.
