Trump lawyers call for independent review of Mar-a-Lago documents

WASHINGTON: Lawyers for former US President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit on Monday, calling for an independent party to be appointed to review documents that FBI agents extracted from his Mar-a-Lago home earlier this month, in a raid that exposed the breadth of a federal investigation. Trump's handling of highly classified material.

Trump's lawyers said the documents were "presumably privileged" material because they were created when Trump was president. According to the former president's team, only a "special person", an independent person appointed by a court to review the material, can determine whether the material is privileged, according to the Miami Herald.

They are also asking a federal court to stop the federal government's review of documents seized from Mar-a-Lago until a "special person" is appointed, describing the FBI's search of Trump's property as a "shockingly aggressive move" against "the front-runner in The 2024 Republican presidential primaries, if he decides to run.”

The FBI searched the former president's Palm Beach home on August 8 as part of an investigation into Trump's handling of classified material, including some of the most sensitive files held by the US government.

Subsequently, the Department of Justice issued an arrest warrant that led to the search, which revealed that the Department had an ongoing criminal investigation into potential violations of the Espionage Act, unlawful destruction of government documents and obstruction of justice.

The search warrant and the delivery of items seized from Trump's home show that FBI agents collected 11 sets of classified material, including one set that contained some of the most sensitive government secrets.
